Thanks to the Mosquito Volunteer Fire Department, we have a new disc golf course under construction at Finnon Lake. It is ten miles north of Placerville, just off the intersection of Mosquito Road and Rock Creek Road. The route is tight with cliffhanger hairpin turns. Extreme sobriety is suggested for the drive. Once you see the Rock Creek Cafe, you are there!
Project manager, Chris Dillender came up with the brainstorm of adding the disc golf course to inhance the lake, that will include boating, fishing, hourseback trails, and camping. After researching the sport, Chris somehow came up with my name, to help with the design. Being every golfer's dream job, I accepted.
Hole # 1 starts out 100' from the resturant. With an elevated tee, the 420' open hole, has the lake looming to the left of the fairway. The next seven holes are short (210' to 300') but technical. This is where Chris and his voluteers did most of the tree and brush clearing. Only the weak and undesirable trees were marked for cutting. My tree hugging hippocricy only goes so far. Watchout for poison oak! After six weeks, mine is just clearing. The fetching Mrs. Getty was none too pleased.
After you make the fist turn around the lake, hole # 9 opens up to a beautiful 750' fairway. The back nine then opens up just a bit,... now,... just a bit, with more ellevation change, and two par 4's. As you circle around the lake three holes come within 100' of the water. The course is filled with oaks and pines with a few buckeyes sprinkled in. Overall, this is a great destination spot for recreation and future tournaments. It has made my top five.
Check in next month to view the progress of the course.
