4/5/08 MHDGC Spring Fling held at Johnny Robert's Memorial disc golf course in Arvada, CO.
This was my first tournament since CO States in October 2007. It is also my first tourney since breaking my leg in December '07.
I played Pro Grandmasters division. This was my first tournament as a Grandmaster, and my first tournament playing pro. There were 5 players in our group, Peter Shive, Michael Hendler, Larry McCourt, and Gary Kloberdanz. Gary was playing up from ADV Grandmasters, and it was great having him in our group.
Honestly, I had pretty low expectations going to the Spring Fling. I have only been able to play 2.5 rounds (over the last 3 weeks) on full size disc golf courses since breaking my leg. What I looked forward to was getting out to play some disc golf with friends and the 8x World Champion, Peter Shive.
What I didn't expect to do was play one of the best rounds of disc golf I have ever played. First round, front nine, I managed to birdie 7 of 9 holes (5 birdies in a row to start!), finishing with a 50 (-7, par 57), unofficially rated 990 round!
The bad news ... I didn't have the physical endurance to play well at all during the second round and shot a very discouraging 71! Probably my best — and worst — disc golf tournament rounds back to back. I don't like making excuses for poor play, but in this case, I have to say my body was just not able to keep up with my mind. Leg cramps, weakness, and pain were all there, and it was just about all I could manage to finish that second round.
I had a great time playing with my group. Congrats to Larry for a well deserved win! Thanks to Michael for sharing the winnings (just kidding!). Thanks to Peter for being there and pushing us all ... I'm sure you'll be kick'in all our butts by the end of summer (see you at the St. Louis Open).
And last but not least ... Thanks for driving Jake! I was a fun trip, I'm sure we'll be doing more traveling and disc golfing this summer.
So ... the progress is good. I feel confident that if I continue my PT and working out, I'll be ready to rock by the St. Louis Open, May 3!
