Minimal disc golf in this post. With Amateur Nationals coming up in less than two short weeks, just over a week really before the player's meeting/banquet on Thursday night, I figured I'd take a few days away from the game to recharge myself a little bit mentally. I did do some throwing yesterday just to keep myself from slipping too much and had a great throw on one of them. Stood at the back of one end zone with a 10mph tailwind and threw a disc out 46 yards past the back of the end zone on the other end (and achieved my goal of putting it through the uprights). You do the math on that one.
The reason I was at the field, though, is because my high school track team has an annual post-season intra-squad decathlon. The team's alumnus are invited to participate. In total something like 12 high school athletes and 6 alumnus participated in the event. It was a great time. Decathlon is split up over two days. First day is more speed and athleticism influenced. Second day is more technique oriented.
100M - 12.4 seconds (575 pt) - best in field: 12.4sec
Long Jump - 16'6" (388 pt) - best in field: 20'1"
Shot Put - 28'1" (400 pt) - best in field: 37'7"
High Jump - 5'2" (445 pt) - best in field: 6'0"
400M - 64.5 seconds (273 pt) - best in field: 56.3sec
I was surprised that I tied the best in the field in the 100M, shocked me really. I've never been a sprinter but I guess I'm staying the same while everyone else declines? No idea. Note that there were no real sprinters there, closest were some long jumpers and a high jumper and a bunch of pole vaulters amongst the student competitors.
110M Hurdle - 18.5 seconds (478 pt) - best in field: 18.5sec
Discus - 77'6" (341 pt) - best in field: 86'3"
Pole Vault - 8'6" (262 pt) - best in field: 12'0"
Javelin - 92' (272 pt) - best in field: 130'
1500M - 5 min 27 sec (415 pt) - best in field: 4min49sec
Again I surprised myself by finishing best in the sprint event. Surprisingly I had the 2nd best discus throw, by an inch. I tried to open up my hips and bring my core around like I do through a forehand. The discus is nothing like a forehand, but using my core in a similar manner worked. Javelin I pulled off 94' in my warmup, but only got 92' in action. Sucked. And I hadn't tried to pole vault (key word: tried, never succeeded) in three years so getting 8'6" was pleasant.
Wound up with 2081 points during the first day and 1768 the second day. Kind of surprising, looking at it. Totaled out to 3849 points. Good enough for third best total in the field (third best amongst alumns as well, both guys that beat me are track coaches at the high school now).

It really was a nice break, I'd forgotten how much I really enjoy track & field. I'd also forgotten what it was like to get out and really test myself physically. Not like I was actually any good, in all reality, of course. To take 18th at the NCAA D1 Championships would take 6069 points and the worst event for that person scored over 580 points. Clearly I am NOT an athlete. But it was a blast and a VERY welcome break from disc golf for a few days.
