Gower or Is it Holmes?

Bill called today and we met this evening at Gower Park. We walked to the first tee and saw that several fairways were parked over by the people at the Gower Pool, so we drove to Holmes to play. I know that Bill really doesn't like Holmes, but I still refuse to play at Timmons. Bill told me about his canoeing trip with Logan and the scouts in Florida and also about playing a tournament at Trophy Lakes this past weekend. He hurt his back canoeing and he left his favorite discs in the lakes at Trophy Lakes. So he was most disgusted!

We played two rounds. I was -2 and even par. The first time around I birdied 2, 6, and 7 and bogeyed 4. The second time I bogeyed 3 and 4 then birdied 6 and 7. Soon after we started the second round my elbow was starting to ache, so I told Bill that I would only play the two rounds.

After hyper-extending that elbow the last time out I let it rest over the weekend, then tried to throw the following Monday. Throwing back-handed made it ache, but I threw two side-armed throws and it felt like it was being pried apart. I let it rest all week, then threw again this Monday. It ached by the time I had finished but I had thrown close to 100 discs. Today I am a little muscle sore around the shoulder and upper arm and after we played a while the elbow was aching, but overall I'm pleased with it. I am planning to play at Easley with Bill on Thursday. The Firecracker Fling is Saturday at Easley and even though I'm not planning to play in it I know that Bill is, so I'll go over there and he can get in a practice round. Bill said that Roger Crooks might be in town by Thursday for the FF, so Roger could play with us too. I haven't played a round with Roger for quite a while.

Bill and I have been playing Gower most of the time. I like Holmes but Bill really dislikes it so we stay at Gower. I am still ticked off about Timmons and I haven't played there since they took the 15th fairway out. As far as I'm concerned they can close Timmons and build houses or another strip mall or something. I like playing Easley but I score very poorly there - especially in tournaments. I have seen the announcement for Boilings Springs, but don't know if I'll make it or not. I play a tournament her and there, but not very often. I played Gastonia in November and I think that is the only tournament that I played last year. Toccoa is one of my favorites courses but I score there like I do at Easley.

I understand the frustration of wanting to quit after a bad tournament. Been there - done that!

I normally play Holmes when I need a quick round. I only play 8 holes each time around tho, it seems silly to play both 100-foot holes for 6 and 7 so I'll tee from the pad by the courts to the #7 basket at the bottom of the hill. More fun to open the arm up a little anyway and there is a good hyzer line around back of the tress that divide the two baskets.

I'm skipping the Fling also this year. Last year's was such a beating I put the game down for a month afterward. I have only recently begun to enjoy that course for casual play but don't think I'm doing any more tournaments out there, my rating can't take it. I feel bad tho, for not supporting the local club-- maybe I'll buy a disc.

Don't miss Boiling Springs at the end of the month, however. They are doing so much work out there, the local parks dept is clearing brush and the local players have made some steps on #7 and cleared wider fairways. Hub City Challenge, July 26th.
