I would say after the first hit...he wouldn't remember the second 'Peter Pan'.
He is still listed in Critical Condition according to our local news.

I kind of figured it wouldn't be as easy as just letting go, but if he could have gotten out of the thing right after he hit the sand, it probably wouldn't have been so bad.

I watched some people kite surfing here on our beach...well Ponce Inlet. I talked to one guy and checked out the rig. Your kinda attached to the controls via a harness. That dude probably had his bell rung pretty good after the first smack off the beach. Anyway, Kite surfing in Tropical Storm conditions is right up there with Bungee Jumping...without the Bungee.
