My name is Eric Sears and my PDGA# 36216. I have been playing discgolf now since June of 2007 and I can't stop. Actually let me back up just a bit. I was introduced to the game back in 2001. Emporia, Kansas to be exact. Played for about 3 months. Did a few leagues, and that was about that. Threw a couple of times with Eric McCabe and had no idea who the hell he was lol. So yea back to the story.
I play. I play alot. I play Mon-Fri from 2-5pm at Scottsdale, Arizona's Vista Del Camino (or Shelly Sharpe Memorial) disc golf park. I have been playing here rain or shine since the time I started last year. I also play with a Sunday morning group at Emerald Park in Mesa, Arizona. I have been doing that for the last 6 months.
So one day at work I was walking by a telecom guys desk and saw that he had the PDGA.com website up. I asked him if he plays. From there it started. Jim Rabb is his name. (James Rabb #14599). We got to talking and I told him I was interested in getting back into the game. The next day he brought me some Innova disc. Hmm a Monster, Beast, Valk, Orc, and a Avair if I remember correctly. I went out to Emerald park which was close to the house and the only course I knew about at that time and was hooked. I started researching disc, websites, youtube, you name it. I was buying this and that had to have all the latest and greatest disc. Had no clue what I was doing but I was having fun doing it.
I was playing mostly as a forehand thrower. Screw backhand, I tried it and couldn't ever get the distance I saw others getting. I could with forehand flicks though. I did that for about 4 months untill I could barly pick my arm up. The Rotator in my left arm was numb 24/7. I was poppin 6-10 asprin a day before I went out to play just so I could play. So around mid July, I started playing out at Vista Del Camino park. Wow this place is like 2 miles from where I work, this is great. Still playing forehand, still popp'n asprin.
So I got out to the Scottsdale course. Wow this place is big. Its long and its open. I get out here and play for the first time and make it maybe 12 holes before I give up. At the time I was about 320 lbs. I was out of shape. IT HURT lol. I kept at it though and in a few weeks I was playing the whole course with out being out of breath. You lose alot of weight playing every day in 100-115 degree heat. So I kept at it. I would sometimes get 36 or 44 holes in. It's a 18 hole course.
My arm was getitng bad about 3 months in. I need to figure out another way or a better style. I hit youtube.com
. I can say I have watched EVERY disc golf video that has ever been put on that website good or bad. For hours at work, I would sit and neglect my daily duties, just waiting for that time so I could dip out and go play. I didn't care about anything but this sport. It consumed me.
I get out to the park and deside it's time to try backhand. At this time I was using Wraiths and Valk's. I had a few Orcs we well. I remember when I first played back in '01 I used to throw some Discraft stuff. I remember having a Talon and a Pred. I used to putt with a Soft Magnet. OMG the destroyer just came out I need those. Gave up on the idea of Discraft yet again. Ended up getting like 10 Proto Destroyers when they came out. LOST EVERY ONE!!!. Still throwing forehand but I know I need to do something about the pain.
