Pop's Twin Pines Disc Golf Course, par 56. This was the location of the last mini disc golf activity in Lancaster, PA. After the last couple weeks of ice box cold weather, Thursday night was a heat wave with temps in the low 40's. The temperature dropped quickly into the high 20's by the end of the round. Pop's Twin Pines DGC is situated on just a quarter of an acre in a mature neighborhood just outside the west side of town. The two pine trees are huge and reside on top of a hump in the corner of the yard. The location is perfect for a mini disc golf green and Pops has placed a mini target under and between the two tree trunks. I love it! I witnessed several shots to the basket bounce off the trees and roll 25 feet away. Don't forget that's a mini rolling that far.The course consists of 4 mini targets of different sorts. During the 18 holes we played to each basket multiple times. The Twin Pines green was used 6 times in all. Obviously the course isn't going to be hosting a tournament of any size. One group, maaaaaaaaybe two goups can play this jewel at the same time. I feel very fortunate to be one of the few to experience this course in person. Pop's Twin Pines DGC is an excellent example of how well mini disc golf fits in small places without much money or expensive landscaping and labor. It seems like mini disc golf courses plug right in and work. No tree cutting, no backhoes, no concrete tee pads to build, no damage to trees and bushes, just play and have fun. I posted a video tour of the course on my page. I don't know if I like how I sound on tape......whatever. I will keep trying to improve my video skills.
I don' think there was really a mini disc golf moment I can single out. The entire round was a moment! Everybody playing was jamming putts from way out! It was a putting clinic is what it was. Four or five putts made their mark from 30 to 45 feet! Both Pops and I nailed putts that went through the many small branches of a young apple tree. The putts were even more spectacular because we made them in the Aunt Jemima basket. Juddy handmade this target. The basket part is flat as a pancake. It works! I can't even count how many putts went in from 15 to 20 feet. I remember complimenting the umbrella light sitting on top of the Twin Pines green right before I knocked it onto the ground with my putt. It fell to the ground and fell into three pieces. No worries, it still works. Ooooops. The other story is little Juddy Burke the 12 year old grandson to Pops. Little Juddy was jamming big putts with everybody else and kept the box for several holes. His score reflects his skills. Juddy has the "thumby" throw down to a science. It is HUGE! The thumby is held with the mini upside down with the thumb on the inside rim throwing it overhand. Little Juddy cashed the only no O.B. Bonus Buck. Well done! I had the only no Bogey Bonus Buck. Here were the scores:
Merrill ,The best mini golfer in the world, Detwieler 47 (-9) course record
Linc 3 time mini world champion 50 (-6) no bogeys
Little Juddy 51 (-5) no O.B.
Juddy Crinkle Paul 51 (-5)
Pops 57 (+1)
Tobin Hurtt 61 (+5)
Til next time
