2010 PDGA Amateur World Doubles Championships

Man, I can't wait, it's almost that time again to head down to Wimberley, Texas. From what I hear, the creek and ponds have water in them this year which should make the tournament even more fun. It's been a couple years since I've played with the waterfall flowing so I'm looking foward to that for sure.

I didn't play last year as my partner, Tom Langley wanted to play the Amateur Texas State Doubles instead. We did okay considering we took on some penalty strokes because of our stupidity. Oh, the life of a amateur player. We're going to have to listen a little closer during the players meeting this time around.

This year will be Tom's first year of Masters play since he turns forty this year. He's got a bum shoulder but hopefully that won't hurt us too bad and I can get the putter hot to cover for that and any other shortcummings. I haven't looked at the players list yet so I'm not sure how we stack up, but I've never really worried about that.

I'm going to head down to the ranch on Thursday night to set up camp with Drew and Andy. They are a couple of the local Weatherford guys I play with quite a bit. Joel and Adam may go down early as well and we'll play a little herd golf for our practice round. I've got a stack of old firewood I'm going to take to so we don't have to scavenge for wood.

My game is improving a little bit but still not where it was and should be. I'm going to have to break down and go see a foot specialist and figure out if it's just bone spurs or something more serious. I can get through eighteen holes with no problem, even twenty seven really but that back nine of the second round starts to hurt. My putter has been the saving grace lately as it has been on more than off.

Oh well, a little more than a week left and then I'm headed south. Should be a lot of fun, can't wait to see old friends and make some new ones.

Almost that time of year again to head to the hill country. Always like to visit with John & Dee and play the ranch courses. I have a different partner this year, the guy I was supposed to play with last year. Should be highly entertaining to say the least.

Now that the bitchin is out of the way. The wind was every bit of a steady 20-25 and gusting upwards to a brisk 35 or so. A pretty decent squall line of boomers rolled through early Saturday morning and stopped right before the A and B pools teed off. The teeboxes stayed in relatively good shape considering the inclement weather.
It was sunny and seventy on Friday for the practice round and I got a little sun-burned. No such luck with that on Saturday as it stayed overcast all day. Sunday was about fifty/fifty and we played just good enough to make the transfer to the finals but not good enough to improve our position.
The golf was ok, the camping could've been better, but the time spent at Circle R was priceless.

I throw this in there too, my partner went to the store and picked up a couple pack of smokes and some black n milds and it seems he didn't get paid so it looks like that gets to come off my tab too. If you can smoke em you should be able to pay for em too. Lesson number five learned.

I could've slept all day yesterday. Tuesday is much better and I almost feel like playing golf again.
At forty five years old, you shouldn't have alot of trips with your buddies that fall in the learning experiences catagory but this weekend may. We drove my truck so I guess that means I got to pay for all the gas too, sweet. Three of us rode together and I got to pay the hundred dollar gas bill, lesson one learned.
I had the last round on Saturday and was really hungry when I finished. I figured I'd fire up my grill and cook some brats when I got back to camp. Don't put your food in a cooler with other peoples food, even if it is your cooler to begin with. Not sure how it happened but my food got cooked along with everything else. The grill was left burning so the leftover brats and burgers were black charcoal chunks of former meat and I was still hungry. Lesson two learned.
Last little rant is that if your going to buy good beer and spend almost ten bucks per six pack on it, then spend a few more bucks and buy a locking cooler. Why would you drink your buddies beer when you still have some of your own ten dollar thirty pack beer left??? I wouldn't and I am usually the one offering my friends one of my good beers. Lesson three learned.
If you sign you and your partner up for golf, get the formalities out of the way as soon as you get there. Still out a hundred and five on that little deal. Lesson four learned.
I had a great time playing golf this weekend. I wish I would've played better but we missed cashing by two spots.
Thanks to Joel and Adam for feeding me something hot Saturday night.
I stayed warm enough when the temps dropped into the lower thirties but I think next trip I'm going to go for the cabin with a nice bed, a refrigerator, and maybe a locking door wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Wow, 47 Int teams and only fourteen will make the final round. Some of them should've played Adv since 34/36 make the transfer. I almost had some "Rec 4 Life " t-shirts made up for some of you guys. I won't throw them on public display but when I see you guys, expect some ribbing.

I thought I might better add this too. I realize that some people in other states view this tourney as more of a Texas Doubles thingy, well, whatever. This year there are people coming from quite a few different states and I'd like to personally welcome all of them.
