I had this all written out then had a computer crash, so this is brief.
Today I ran into Billy Crump at Mint Hill and played with Mike Johansen from the Renny movie and Wit at Charlotte's Web.
63 F, sunny, light breeze.
Charlotte (Matthews), NC- Squirrel Lake: New, well marked, map, cement tees. Carved out of old woods. A few driver holes, mostly medium and short. Sometimes too tight- narrow fairways with tree(s) in the middle leaving for no shot or at least not a good route. Hopefully it will get beat in fast.
Charlotte (Mint Hill), NC- Mint Hill:Some up and down shots lined with thick young cedar/pine forest and rough. A few very short, but beginning with a 300' field shot and ending with a 400' wide tunnel. Easy, but can be tricky especially the short downhill turnover. Good for practice. 18 holes needed here! Scenic, one of the nicest looking courses around. Well marked, good tees. Well maintained.
Charlotte, NC- Charlotte's Web @ Hornet's Nest:I shot 64, 8 strokes better than Renny Gold. Begins with about 6 par 4's and 5's in a row, then 2 raised baskets. Doesn't get any easier. Has every type of shot, requires a well rounded game. Rewards for smoothness and accuracy, punishment for failure. Sometimes very tight but not unfair. Long, wooded landing zone holes is the norm. 1/3 open and long, with one along road and creek. Not as hilly as Renny Gold. Begins with a 550' hole, throw a 300-400' straight fade left to a landing area, then uphill down tunnel into woods. Next hole is 650' across a field then into woods down to a pond. Finishes with a short shot out of woods to a cement island basket you must land on off the tee or re-tee. Dual layouts in park, there is a shorter easier course here that has some of it's own baskets and fairways. Can be navigated, but online map is advisable. Best time of year to play it- would be brutal on a hot day and with summer green growth.
Charlotte, NC- Veteran's:
Decrepit- a basket possibly missing, some tees unmarked or just buried in Kudzu, 2 broken baskets, unmaintained and overgrown. Rough, kudzu and ivy cover most holes. Bad area, it's just tucked into a small corner of the park. Clearly left to rot, it probably doesn't get used much and there's no reason to play it. Short.
