Many of you probably never heard of this course. It is in South River, Ontario, Canada. I urge to you check out www.algonquindiscgolf.com
- take a look at the photo gallery, check out the course map and please read my story and my reason for writing this blog. My name is Hanna - Mama Hanna as lot of my disc golf friends call me and my son Dusan Nedelko worked incredibly hard to make sure that Algonquin Disc Golf course would become a reality for the enjoyments of local residents and many visitors. He proposed the course, designed it and built it with help of many friends. He continously brought people - many of them children to the course to introduced them to the sport and organized 2 - now well knows tournaments - bringing visitors to the area.
Unfortunately - Dusan was tragically killed in a car accident on Feb.18th,2010. It is with great disbelieve and sadness that what is hapenning now in South River is a reality. Because of activity of local Park Planning Committee, the town council is considering destroying the course by moving the front 9 holes to the back of the park property. The only reason? Disc golf present danger to potential pedestrians - let me assure you that there has NEVER been an incident of injury and the only report I know of is that a lady walking in the park was scared when a disc flew near by. Assuring the committee and the council that multi-user parks are a common set-up, giving examples of how the entire issue is handled in other parks - i.e. posting proper warning signage is falling on deaf ears. Bottom line is - this effort to destroy the course is headed by an individual who has nothing better to do than start a cause and stick to it, no matter how wrong he can be.
I hope that even though many of you have no direct interest in this particular course, that you will voice your opinion as it addresses the need to promote the sport, make is accessible to more and more people, allow children to discover it and everyone to enjoy it. I am asking you to visit www.algonquindiscgolf.com
and sign our petition to stop the nonsense of destroying the beautiful course. I am asking every disc golfer to take that step and help me preserve my son's work - and thank all of you from the bottom of my heart!
If you wish to speak to me directly, you can find me on Facebook (search for Hanna Trafford), email me at email@example.com, or respond on this site.
Again - thank you!
