Man what a weekend of disc golf
It started on the 24th of October when myself(right) my brother(left) and another local player chris(centre) hopped on the plane on the way to Sydney. I couldn’t even sleep the night before lucky we had to leave around 3:30am so we could get out to the airport to catch our 4hr flight to Sydney.
Once we landed in Sydney we raced down to pick up our car and started to head of to the course. We must have got lost a couple of times but managed to get there about 2:30 in the afternoon (2-3 hour difference). Once we got there we could see people already having a round so before we could even unpack our bags we headed of to see what the course had to offer, Once we got back from our round we headed of to the bottle shop and picked up a few cold ones went back and caught up with old friends that we had met over the last couple of years. Having not slept the night before and being awake for around 28hrs I was tired and decide to hit the sack as the rest of the guys partied on.
On the Saturday play I was glad to find out that I would be playing with Kurt Karlson. Kurt had won the last few Australian Champs so I knew if I could keep up with him I would be playing alright and would end up at the top of the leader board but this proved not to be the case.
When I started the round I was more worried that I hadn’t concentrated on my puts enough in warm up, but as I found out it was my drives that let me down in the first 18 holes of the day 5 out of my 18 drives left my hand to low and were digging into the ground around 20m away from me lucky for me I was able to make some longer puts and land a lot of my mid-range shots close to the basket so I wouldn’t fall to far behind Kurt after the first 18 holes I had finished about 8 or 9 on the leader board.
The second round of 18 would turn out to be a lot better than the first 18 although it was a different layout I could feel myself playing a lot better making the drives and also making the long putts that in the end would land me in 5 spot at the end of the days play.
Saturday nights is what I look forward to though its were you get a chance to sit down with all the other guys from around Australia and also meet new people from Australia and New Zealand find out how they are and what’s going on with disc golf in there area like new courses or up and comers to the game. After we had a few beers we also headed out for a night game that was great fun there were around 20 people playing and we decided to play all at once and we didn’t worry about waiting for anyone to have there turn it was just a all in disc-athon the discs lit up the sky it was a awesome site to see.
When I woke up Sunday morning I was feeling a bit sorry for myself after having a few to many the night before I shot of down to the shop and got myself a good breakfast and I extra strong coffee. By the time I got back to the course everyone was up and there were heaps of people out throwing plastic ready for the day’s action. Sundays action sore us playing 24 straight holes followed by lunch then the final 4 would play off over 9 holes, Being on the second card and only 2 strokes behind I knew I had a shot at making the top 4 so I decided my game plan for the round was going to be not getting a 4 on any of the holes only 2’s and 3’s. This worked for me because at the end of the 24 holes I had shot 22 3’s and 2 2’s so I was really happy with my efforts now all I had to do was wait for all the other groups to come in so I see where I ended up, I was extremely happy when I went over to the leader board a sore that I had actually moved up to 3rd spot knocking 2 people down the order. The final 9 holes I played in the top group and I don’t know if I had lost my mojoe, my energy or if it was the crowed following but I lost it a bit shooting almost more 4’s in 9 holes than I did in the hole tournament but in the end I finished in 4th spot and over all I am happy with this as my goal at the beginning of the weekend was a top 5 finish, Least I know that next year my goal will be for a number 1 finish.
