The DEW -- The Downtown Emma & Wade.
Thats what we named it. Today it was 55 degrees in Southwest Michigan. the previous few days, everything has been one suicidal sheet of ice. Until today, everything melted...the rain helped though. You know what that means...yup...disc golf. but wait a minute...Wade and I had no car, and no money for a bus to either knollwood or oshtemo DGC. Sooooo....we decided to improvise alittle bit.
We borrowed a portable metal basket from Wade's friend Tim earlier this morning. At first we started out by just putting around in the apartment from the back of the kitchen to the basket which was placed by the door...about 20-25ft. Then, we moved our little putting party out down the the side of the street in front of the house. We played horseshoes (Wade ended up winning...). A cop pulled up and asked who was winning and told us to just stay out of the way of cars. After wards we got some food and chilled for a minute. That when it came to Wade. "Why don't we just golf around downtown Kalamazoo?" What a great idea because it was SWEEEEET! We went all over town and Western Michigan University Campus. Setting up our own 18 hole DGC. Just going with the flow. Wade got a little daredevil in him and decided to throw across 4 lanes of traffic to this island type area between the 4 lanes. He went down the road to someones driveway while i stayed on the little island thing just to snag up the disc if it went all kamikaze and landed in the middle of the road. He threw it right at the perfect stop in traffic. it straightened out for almost a little too long, then broke back to the left, bounced off the middle of the road, right onto the island. It was definitely very epic! It was raining alot, and we got soaked but who cares!? We play unless its a blizzard, a lightning storm, or a tornado. I think that we would even play if it was the Apocalypse. I would want one more round in before the end of the world, wouldn't you?
Anywho...we played a full 18 holes, straight from the imaginations of Wade and I. It was some of the most fun i've had in a while. I wouldn't underestimate the possibilities for some great disc golfing...even in the middle of a city with over 300,000 people there. Plus, i had an ace run on hole 6! i was like 6 inches below the basket when it was coming in the for the kill. I still don't have the pleasure of saying that i've had an ace quite yet but i know that this upcoming summer, i'll get one. I'll get to hear the breathtaking sound of chains from the tee....Now that will be an epic day for me!
Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday week! Happy New year to all and to all a game of disc golf!
