The Community of Disc Golfers and About All Things Disc Golf

Are you a PDGA amateur who is tired of high entry fees and craptastic plastic payouts?  Are you a PDGA pro who competes in age or gender restricted pro divisions who is not competitive in MPO?  Do you play tournaments in south-eastern Michigan?  If you answered "yes" to two of those questions, keep reading.

In the earliest years of this millenium I used to run tournaments in Michigan.  When my brother wanted to start running tournaments in Illinois I cut back to doing nothing in Michigan, and I started helping my brother in Chicago.

Back then I was already tired of high entry fees and plastic payouts.  So we experimented with trophy-only optional entry fees: as an amateur you could get in for prizes, or not pay the prizes surcharge and just play for the trophies and CTPs.  That led to experimenting with Half-In: you could pay half the pro entry fee and if you cashed, take half the cash indicated for that spot.  The half you turned down was redistributed to the full-in players in your pro division.

We have also experimented with super-low entry fees and no prizes, like $5 entry PDGA sanctioned tournaments, or $15 entry fee with a player pack.  I would like to bring the super-low entry fee sanctioned tournament to Michigan, because all I see here is high entry fees and mediocre amateur payouts.  I'd rather pay $5 or $10 and skip the craptastic plastic.  But here's the twist: everyone would also have the option to enter into a cash side game where they would be competing against similarly rated players for cash.

If you answered yes to two of those questions and you want to help make this happen, I'm looking for you.  Soon I will make a DGRS club page and start inviting SE Michigan players to join.  If you see this, maybe you could suggest a name for the DGRS club.

I think a system where a TD was permitted to pay the amateurs cash would be good for internet vendors like Mike Barnett.  The current system pumps so much plastic into the market that tournament amateurs never really have to buy discs with cash, and when they do, they buy for a lot less than retail from friends who win discs at tournaments.

Only Pros should compete in PDGA sanctioned events and get there rating, prizes could be given for players after the cashed places(I think top 3 in this case).

A "side tourney" for ams with a cash prize should always be ran separate.  Who cars about a magic # that tells me how good or bad I am at disc golf compared to my peers.  This is Golf any one can win, on a given day! Plus, no fees!

Like your idea of 'not really a payout.'

For years want to see money come from outside the sport.

No reason why pro fees should exceed $100 or more.

If the tournaments and or the PDGA did what was expected, then the cash would be there for payouts.

Maybe your way would bring in more participants. Leading to 'outside the sport' sponsorship.

The current way is not working.

As far as the Tour del Sol, that's a different story.

Mike Barnnet of SunKing Discs started a non sanctioned tourney called "Tour del Sol",it's now 3 yrs running with about 10 stops in Fl.Entry fee was $25,$5 went to the EDGE program,shirt/disc /mini was with package. One could "up" additional $10 for better plastic. It's changed this year, info can be found on sidebar of Tourney's listed onDGRus home page,2nd stop for further explanation of change.

The P in PDGA really stands for Amateur since they decided the the real money was in amateur disc golf. They are trying to be everything for everybody. Run whatever you want and be creative.
